Advice?

I know I almost never post on a Saturday, but this is for my benefit and I need to get it out there. Of course, the reason why my interview with the nursing home went so well on Thursday was because I was offered a part-time RN nursing position on the spot. I am supposed to let them know Tuesday afternoon if I want it. Here's my problem: a bunch of jobs at the Mayo Clinic (where I would LOVE to work) just opened up (after not having any openings for a couple months now). If I accept this job offer and then happenstance get an interview and an offer with Mayo in the next 1-2 months, doesn't it look bad with my current employer/on my resume? But I'm also not a guarantee that I will get these Mayo jobs & I have to start paying back student loans in June.
Anyone have advice or experienced something like this before??
I really would love to start working, but my dream position is in a hospital setting. And one of my favorite floors has an RN opening. I just don't want an employer to look bad at me, I guess.
Ugh.

  1. I think it would be just fine to leave first job for te second. I have a good friend that moved around between three nursing jobs quickly in trying find the best fit and she has not suffered at all. In fact, she's now in the place she wants to be and there weren't any hard feelings at any previous employers. Hope that may help a little. 😊

  2. Are the openings at Mayo FT? Most employers will understand if you get a position better than what they can offer you. I often think it is better to find a new position before you make too many close connections with coworkers. That way it is easier to leave and you don't feel awkward. Plus, you never know, in the 1-2 month you work at the nursing home could be the greatest or the worst! The nursing home could end up not being a good fit for you.

  3. My suggestion would be to accept the job you were offered but when you do let them know that you are applying to the Mayo Clinic and that is you are offered a job there that you plan on taking it. This way you don't blindside them if you get a job at Mayo and you also don;t burn your bridges and go back if you ever need too...

    1. This is what I would say too. You'll get the chance to learn some more while you wait for a job, should you not make it at Mayo this time around--and some money while you wait never hurt anyone right? haha. Also, no one would ever be angry at you for leaving for your dream job : ] At least if you tell them this, maybe they will save some resumes of other candidates to call back when you leave, so they don't have to go through the whole process all over again.

So yeah, I think the consensus is, go for it!!

  4. Another thing to consider is that a lot of places look more favorably on you if you are employed currently. I am a manager and when I interview people I they have a valid reason ie: incredible opportunity or FT instead of PT one switch like this would not send up any warning signs. I look for patterns like 'never stays at one position more than 1-2 years' not one blip.

  5. I think you should take the job offer and still apply. I'd have to agree with Laura, a lot of employers look more at those applicants who are currently employed. You could let the nursing home know you are applying for the other clinic, buy me, personally, I wouldn't. There's no right or wrong here. I wish you the best of luck! And CONGRATS on the job offer that you did get!!!

  6. Honestly, I would take the job that is being offered because there is no guarantee for the Mayo jobs. And like others have said, if you end up leaving the PT job for the FT, you can explain it was a benefit to you and the furthering of your career.

  9. Thanks for linking up with us today at Medical Mondays. Advice. Hm, that is hard. My first instinct says if the job they offered you is a good job and one that you would enjoy for a long time take it. If you heart is set on Mayo you can apply and if they offer you a position you can re-evaluate your decision then. Sometimes you have to do what is best for you even if it might be inconvenient for others. Best of luck making your decision.

  10. Breanne, I know this is the advice you keep getting- but I would take the job and still apply at Mayo. Something similar happened to me in my first job. I took an occupational therapy position at a SNF, but was offered my "dream postion" in mental health shortly after, so I left after only being there 3 months. I can't say my employer was thrilled, but it has had no negative impact whatsoever on my career. No one can blame you for taking a better job!
