Friday's Letters

Dear Friday,

You were awesome. I was able to give around 20 shots total today between the flu clinic and study abroad immunization clinic on campus. YES!

Giving shots is one of my favorite nursing things I've done so far and I've pretty much perfected my flu shot technique. I got compliments all day on how good of a job I do giving them :)

I even got to give one to my old Social Work professor!

Oh and what am I up to tonight, you ask? Well, I am taking the night off, cuddling up in bed, and watching the SVU Scare-a-thon. Of course, this is because tomorrow I am working on my senior paper and a Community video from 10am-3pm.

20 SHOTS PEOPLE!

October 5, 2012

Dear Friday...

Thank you for being so freaking wonderful!

Reasons why today rocked:
  • I had my first Same Day Surgery IV Start experience this morning and I got 2 of the 3 IV's!! And the first one that I missed, even my nurse struggled to get in so I didn't feel as bad. You guys - I ACTUALLY PUT IN AN IV!!
  • We talked about vaccinations in my Community Nursing class and I love talking about vaccinations. Especially when it brought us to a tangent on the Law and Order SVU episode with Hilary Duff in it :)
  • Some of my roomies and I are having a Fiesta Friday with tacos and margaritas! Both equally favorites in my book.
  • The weather is finally getting cooler. The high tomorrow is only supposed to be 50. Fantastic Homecoming football game weather!
And despite the fact that I didn't get any coffee today (boo!), I am still in a fantastic mood!

Friday's Letters

Dear Community & OB Tests this week,
I will study for you, I promise. But please be kind. Especially Community. Because it's so hard to pay attention in class!

Dear University of Iowa Nursing Grad School,
I went to your booth yesterday with an open mind because I've heard great things about you. However, your representatives were not very enthused, passionate, or inviting. But thanks for your syringe pen!

Dear University of Minnesota Nursing Grad School,
Your representative was the sweetest and so helpful and reassuring. I still don't know yet if I want to go back to school, but knowing my options makes me feel better.

Dear Box Elder Bugs,
We spent a buttload on bug spray to kill you off since your whole family seems to be living on our front door. You worked for a day and now we have been infested again. It really is digusting.

Dear Monday Night Clinical,
You went exceptionally well this week and I'm hoping you go just as wonderfully next week as well.

Dear Grey's Anatomy,
I chose to watch Glee last night instead of you, but I did sneak a few peeks during the show. Can't wait to watch the whole thing this afternoon!

Dear Senior Paper,
I actually read 3 of the articles I will be using to write you, which is an improvement. However, I still need 10 or so articles, all of which I have been unable to find. Please be easier on me!

Dear Readers,
Don't you just LOVE Starbucks, especially in the fall?! Me too. Go over to my bloggy buddy Sam's blog and enter to win $10 to Starbucks. Or don't. Because I want to win too ;)

Friday's Letters

Today's Friday's Letters is a personal blog miracle: a live post! Yes, that's right - this post was not scheduled ahead of time and I am sitting down to write it! If you've seen my posts these last 3 weeks, you know that I have done a horrible job keeping up because of my busy nursing school life. BUT I promised myself I wouldn't neglect my blog after the summer (as I did in previous years) and continue blogging despite my stressful schedule.

Dear Iowa,
Thank you for the beautiful weather lately. Well, except for the whole raining thing today. But I am loving the 50 and 60 degree temperatures!

Dear Friday,
You are here! And I got to sleep in and spend time getting ready and blogging. Thank you for being so very kind! Too bad the rest of this weekend I will either be working on homework or spending time on-call for OB in case a mom goes into labor. That's giving me even more stress.

Dear Baby Boy I took care of in OB yesterday,
What a cutie! Thanks for putting up with my poking and prodding while I did my first newborn assessment. But no thanks for your dirty diaper.

Dear X-Factor,
This is the first year I am really watching you from start to finish and I am LOVING Demi and Britney as judges!

Dear puppy dog Ford,
I loved having you in the car last Sunday to drop me back off at school. Even though I have scratches and bruises all over the top of my thighs from you standing on me, it was totally worth it. I miss you!!!

In other nurse-y news (hehe), during clinical on Monday night, I had to try to restart my first IV. Too bad my patient had horrible veins. My first try I got blood return and was in the vein, but it turned and came out. The second try, we spotted a vein and stuck the needle in and the vein disappeared! So frustrating, but my instructor said I did a really good job, they just had bad veins.

Hopefully I'll get to do more "live" posts like this!

Dear Senior Paper Topic,
Could you work it all out for me? Your theme has to be Patient-Centered Care and has to meet a sub-category as well. My original idea didn't get approved by my advisor, therefore I have resorted to a few others including: home births, teen pregnancy education, hospice, and medication teaching. Yet I can't seem to find the rights words to make it sound super specific & Patient-Centered. Oy vey!

Dear 4:00pm,
You are almost here and that means I get to GO HOME! And see my puppy & kitty! And see my baby cousins tomorrow!! So freaking excited!

Dear Sentinel Event group,
Let's finish this little Root Cause Analysis TODAY! And then we won't have to meet on Sunday afternoon :) Please?

Dear Skull ring from the bookstore,
I'm so tempted to go back and buy myself one. In fact, I think I might stop over there before my meeting in 20 minutes...

Friday's Letters

Dear Luther College Nursing Class of 2013,
I love you guys so much! My saving grace this semester is that I have y'all to vent to & you understand!

Dear Nursing classes,
You are going to kick my butt this semester! And all you're solo clinicals to random places are making it really hard for me to plan everything out considering I don't have a car & don't drive...

Dear Community Nursing class,
One of your assignments is to have a blog? Well, sure I'll do it! Doesn't even feel like homework! Go check it out: http://lccommunitynursing.blogspot.com

Dear Ford,
Puppy doggy, I miss you!!!!!! Hearing you howling at a siren while I was on the phone with Grandma made my week.

Dear Baker Village,
You seem forever and a day away from all my classes. The hike back is a pain in the butt, but am I going to have good calf muscles with all that uphill climbing this semester!

Dear Bloggers.com,
Thanks for featuring me on your front page today? I have a gajillion e-mails from people asking to add me on Bloggers, but no new followers through GFC. Hmmm...

Friday's Letters

AKA My last blog post from Minnesota until November or December!

 Dear Laundry,
If you could wash yourself, that would be pretty cool. Seeing as I have 4 loads to wash before tomorrow morning. No prob, no prob.

Dear Saturday,
Please don't be too hot. I have to move my sister into the 3rd floor of her air-conditioner-less dorm room & would really appreciate it.

Dear Vanderbilt University Hospital Nurse Residency Program,
Your application is super long & involved. Still don't know if I should actually complete it. But I love Nashville so much, I just might.

Dear Luther College,
Please take it easy on me this semester. I do have a senior paper to write & all most of my friends already graduated. This is going to be interesting...

Dear Birthday,
You are going to suck this year. Not only am I turning 24 & that much closer to 30, but I have clinical from 8-10:30am, class from 11am-1:15pm, and more clinical from 2:30-10pm. And my senior paper is due the next day. Wow. Fabulous.

Dear Readers,
Wish me luck this weekend! I'll be posting from good ole Decorah, Iowa starting Monday!

Friday's Letters

Time for my favorite link-up - Friday's Letters (& it's not my favorite simply because it's Friday).

Dear Marissa,
I'm sending my girly vibes your way to have a baby girl today! Told you it would happen around August 18th ;) I can't wait to see him/her the next time I'm in town!

Dear 98 Degrees,
I loved you then. And I love you now. I was singing along to every word while you were performing on the Today Show this morning. And it was pretty awesome seeing all the women my age in the audience fan-girling over you. One Direction who?

My, my, Jeff. Aging has done you well...

Dear clothes,
Please pack yourself. I hate packing. And unpacking. And repacking.

Dear Jeff,
Thank you for giving out Jordan's timeline as to when she needs to have a ring on it. Don't think we won't hold you to this.

Dear Multiple Giveaways I have entered this week,
You're awesome. C'mon big money!

Dear Leopard phone case,
I love you more than I should. And you match my nails!

Friday's Letters

Dear Beth & Sarah,
Spending 3 hours at Dunn Brothers catching up was exactly what I needed! I can't wait for all our fun future adventures we just HAVE to start planning!

Dear Caitlin,
Hope you're having fun in Prince Edward Island (even though I should definitely be there with you!). Can't wait until you get back on the 20th so we can have one last girls night with all 4 of us!

Dear School,
Please stop sneaking up on me. I move in 2 weeks from Sunday & have almost nothing ready, cleaned, or packed.

Dear Motivation,
Please kick in so I'm not packing things the night before moving in. This may or may not have happened 3 years ago. Bad decision.

Dear Ford,
You're being a little trouble maker today. Chill the heck out.

Dear Whoever-Called-Me-Yesterday,
I'm sorry I didn't answer the phone. I literally sat there the whole time it was ringing trying to figure out how to answer it until it went to voicemail. I now know how to answer my smartphone (baha!) so feel free to call again.

Dear Luke Bryan,
Thank you for singing "The Boom-Boom Song" as my 2 year old cousin calls it. Highly entertaining. And a great song!

Dear Thunderstorm,
Thank you for happening literally less than an hour after I tweeted that I hoped you would happen. If that makes sense...

Dear Big Brother,
Thank you for bringing back Britney, Janelle, & Dan. Three of my faves. And thank you for putting Ian in the house. He's a pretty cool dude, even if he is on Boogie's team.

Dear sunburn,
Thank you for not hurting as much even if you are starting to peel (in an ugly, ugly way).

Dear Luther College Book Shop,
Thank you for having my Nursing Management course textbook be available for rental for super cheap. This will save me from spending an outrageous amount of money on a book I will never use again in my life.

Dear Friends,
Thank you for never getting old even if I have seen the episode a dozen times.

Dear Blog readers, visitors, stalkers, twitter followers, etc,
Please follow my blog. You will ensure I update this space more frequently and I love new friends!

Friday's Letters

Dear Minnesota weather,
Thank you for cooling off somewhat the last few days. A temperature with humidity of 105 degrees is not very appealing.

Dear Dawson's Creek,
Thank you for being on Netflix. I forgot how much I enjoy teen dramas.

Dear Nicholas Sparks,
Thank you for writing such awesome books. I fall in love with each one.

Dear CW Rochester,
Thanks for the free movie tickets. I love free things!

Dear People Like Us,
Thank you for being such a great movie and casting hotties like Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks.

Dear nails,
Please don't chip again. Thanks!

Dear 4th of July,
Please don't be rainy.

Dear Rolo McFlurry,
Why are you so tempting with your powers? But you were pretty delicious last night.

Dear caffeine,
Must you keep me up until 1am if I drink you after 3pm? I would like to be asleep by 12am latest.

Have a wonderful weekend!

A Letter to Me

August 2007: Formal Night

Dear 18 year old Breanna,

Congratulations! You graduated high school & have been accepted to a wonderful college - Luther College! Cherish this time in your life; it is full of unending opportunity - take advantage of it.

Soon you will be heading off to college and living away from home for the first time. It's not as scary as it seems. You will be rooming with 3 wonderful girls your freshman year. One of whom will become one of your best friends. Another who will change your life and share many helpful conversations. Enjoy your first year. It will change you in ways you never imagined and the girls living on your floor will make college less intimidating.

I hear you just changed your major from Nursing to Elementary Education? Why did you decide to do that? Think it through. I know it's not where your true passion lies: Nursing is. Don't be afraid to speak up when you realize this later. And please, stay at Luther: it is your home away from home. Dissecting a cat isn't so bad; don't let that course be the reason you abandon nursing.

You haven't started blogging yet, but next year you will. Keep up with it more: it really is so much fun and the people you meet because of it are so cool.

Enjoy the rest of your life. You are only 18 once.

Love,
Breanna

Dear week,
Can you please be over? You have not been very kind to me.

Dear computer,
Really? You had to break down on me when I only needed you to stay alive for 9 more months?

Dear The O.C.,
Why are you such an addicting show? I now know what all the hype was back when I was in high school!

Dear maxi dress I am currently wearing,
You are way too comfy! Thanks!

Dear Luther College Nursing class,
I really miss you all and can't wait till I see you all again at the end of August :)

Dear blog friends,
Thanks for being so sweet and making this week just a little bit better :)

Dear America,
Where are all the sweet (straight) single males? And can I have one?

Dear Sarah,
I miss you! Please come home soon so we can hang out!

Love always, Breanna
